We spent time going through the Yamas … now let us begin looking at the Niyamas, the second Limb of the eight limbs of yoga.
B.K.S. Iyengar writes that Niyamas are “Self purification by discipline. The second stage of yoga mentioned by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras.”
The first Niyama is Saucha … or purity. Purify our bodies, thoughts, and words. Purification is different that cleanliness … cleanliness works on the outside while purity works on our inside and outside and changes our very essence. As we begin to purify our thoughts and bodies it brings a brightness and clarity to our being.
Purifying can take many forms for each of us and doesn’t have to be a ‘huge’ process all at once. It can include: physical exercise, fasting, letting go of old habits or memories, self-reflection and study, etc. I invite you to ‘purify’ over the next week, whatever form that takes for you, and do so with the intention to ‘lighten’ the load you carry.
