The New Moon or Dark Moon is when the Moon is closest to the Sun as seen from the Earth - signifying new energy and the beginning of the next Moon cycle. With this fresh, new beginning upon us, it is the ideal time to set new intentions.
This is the time that I will sit with pen and paper and think about the things that I want to cultivate in my life ... both short and long term. This isn't about making a huge to-do list ... I keep it simple, positive, and write them as though they already are such. They can be as simple as 'I am making healthy choices' "I am volunteering to teach yoga' 'I am happy, peaceful, and safe' ...
I have New Moon and Full Moon rituals that I follow each month. I have a special bowl in my room that I keep things in ... trinkets, notes and pictures from those I love, and my handwritten intentions. When it is New Moon time, I have a simple ritual that I follow in which I create a quiet, safe, sacred space by lighting candles, playing soft music, smudge the room with Sage to clear out negative energy. I will do my yoga practice to help center and ground my energy and then I bring out my intention bowl so that I can add my new intentions. I'll read my new intentions out loud and sit with those for a bit. I will use my Mala beads and recite a Mantra (a powerful word or phrase) such as "Om gam ganapataye namaha" to nurture my intention and help them flourish. This particular Mantra is to the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha and is used when you want to remove internal or external obstacles. I end the ritual with a quiet meditation and usually hit the hay, it works best for me. If you give it a try or do your own Moon rituals ... I'd love to hear about it!
The Moon has many phases and is powerful, lovely, and mysterious ... just like we are. Embrace it all, love it all, respect it all, and surrender to it all.
More on Smudging, Full Moon Rituals, the power of Mala Beads, and Mantras coming soon.
Much love, always...
